Sandiacre Town faced arguably their strongest test of the season so far with a trip to Chesterfield on Saturday. Although the Queens Park side haven’t perhaps started as well as they’d like, the 2008 league winners will still be aiming for top four finish.

While Sandiacre were only missing the services of Chesney Hughes, Chesterfield had to do without Matt Fletcher, Wes Durston and the injured bowling duo of Matt Higginbottom and former New Zealand international Iain O’Brien. They do have Jamie Pipe and the former Derbyshire wicket-keeper batsman has adapted to Premier League cricket after a reasonable start last year. Pipe is just 30 runs shy of his 2010 total, has three centuries already this season, including back-to-back hundreds last weekend against Ticknall and he started in ominous form after Rob Attwood won the toss, putting Chesterfield into bat.

After Ben Slater drove Ryan McFadyean through cover-point, uppishly in the first over, Pipe sold him down the river. Slater perhaps appeared to make his ground and was in disbelief as Tom Munroe raised his finger. It wasn’t the only contentious decision the umpires were to make though.

Pipe then took Dan Wheeldon’s first over for 16, including 6 over square-leg and fours crashed through the covers. But his attacking nature proved to be his downfall as he wafted at a wide delivery from McFadyean, edging behind. His 19 came off 13 balls and left Chesterfield 25 for 2.

The hopes of Chesterfield posting a competitive total rested on the skipper Alex Hibbert and the experienced Simon Lacey. The batsmen got value for money for their shots as anything through the ring raced away over a quick outfield. Hibbert offered a contender for shot of the day with a straight drive off Wheeldon but he was the next to depart, tickling McFadyean down the leg-side.

Joe Cooper came and went edging Wheeldon to second slip, but Lacey was the wicket Sandiacre needed. He survived a huge LBW shout when John Jordison was brought into the attack and had moved onto 24 when he too chased a wider delivery, this time from Wheeldon and managed only to inside edge a catch to Danny Green, his third of the innings.

That was 83 for 5 and it soon became 92 for 7 as Chris Marples managed only a single before being trapped in front by Jordison and Drage Thompson skied a catch to cover off the same bowler.

Chesterfield were in desperate need of a late flurry, something to give their bowlers a chance of defending. Tim Kirk played some lovely straight drives, as he marshalled the tail, and Brian Gladwin followed by Michael Deane, decided attack was the best form of defence. Gladwin crashed three boundaries taking the score to 118 before he was bowled Wheeldon. Deane faired even better striking six fours in his 25 from 15, but tried his luck once too often eventually finding the safe hands of Matt Gouldstone running in from long-on to give Jordison his third wicket. Paul Goodwin was bowled by the returning McFadyean leaving Kirk unbeaten on 22 as Chesterfield were all out for 158.

Sandiacre’s reply was far from straightforward. Deane has been in good form so far this year and he carried that into this innings. He had James Chapman and Matt Gouldstone LBW to dubious looking decisions either side of Naveed Queshi chipping to Lacey in the covers. Sandiacre, John Trueman in particular, were still scoring at a good rate. Goodwin was struggling and it was a surprise to see bowl as many overs as he did, his 8 costing 48 runs.

David Jordison soon became Deane’s fourth wicket, edging behind to leave Sandiacre 98-4. And Deane nearly had a fifth with a strong LBW appeal against Trueman, where Chapman and Goulstone can consider themselves unfortunate, Trueman perhaps had got away with one.

Rob Attwood came in at 6, short of time at the crease but played nicely, taking his side to the brink of victory with 22 from 32 balls before he too seemed unhappy when given out caught down the leg-side off the spin of Gladwin. The chunttering continuing even after John Jordisons three boundaries took Sandiacre to victory. Trueman finishing unbeaten on 67 as Sandiacre won by 5 wickets.

There remain sterner tests for Sandiacre this season, perhaps from a stronger Chesterfield side themselves in the return fixture, as they remain 22 points clear at the top.

Sandiacre’s seconds were given the run around by Aston on Trent. The bowlers were all given the treatment as Aston amassing an incredible 346-5 from their 46 overs. Anser Ali’s 65 from 81 was dwarfed by Azhar Mahmoods 106 from 78 deliveries, who in turn was eclipsed by Nasir Khan’s 105 from just 33 balls. His phenomenal innings contained 10 fours and 10 sixes. However, both innings seem in stark contrast to previous years, prompting claims from Sandiacre of some underhand behaviour, an issue the league are likely to investigate.

Nasir Khan then had Sandiacre trouble with two early wickets before being taken off with the score 5-2 adding fire to the ‘ringer’ debate. Ally Leek however, continued his good start to the year with a defiant 55 before he became Khans third of four wickets. Sandiacre held firm though finishing 140-8.

There were no such problems for the Third XI who recorded their 7th straight win in the league beating Chesterfield Barbarians by 7 wickets. Only three Barbarians made it to double figures, Sam Lawson (86*), Craig Bradbury (43) and Martin Wagstaff (23) as they were all out for 190. Paul Standring and George Domleo doing the damage with 3-30 and 4-47 respectively.

The total posed few problems for Sandiacre who knocked them off inside 37 overs. Neil MacNamee made 79, John Murfin 48 and Rich Burne an unbeaten 30 as Sandiacre continued their impressive start to the season.

Sandiacre Town’s dominant start to the season continued as they brushed Alfreton aside at Longmoor Lane on Saturday.

Rob Attwood won the toss and placed faith in his team to earn him a third successive 27 point win at home on the bounce, but it was plain sailing as they lost James Chapman for a duck, yorked by the left-arm seam of Australian Nicholas Walden.

Walden was being backed up superbly by Adam Burton who bowled an excellent 10 over spell costing just 23, with John Trueman and Naveed Quershi playing carefully. Qureshi was very quick to latch onto anything short or with a bit of width, powerfully cutting and pulling both bowlers to the boundary.

Having reached 33 Qureshi was given out caught behind. There was a noise as the ball passed the bat but Qureshi’s obvious disappointment coupled with a rather half-hearted appeal from the behind the stumps suggested the noise may have been bat on pad, regardless though, Qureshi was on his way and the wicket was nothing less than Burton deserved. Trueman followed soon after, edging a cut to Alex Mace in the gully off John Clarke’s bowling. The relief from Mace – who had dropped a similar chance in Clarke’s previous over – was pretty evident.

As they seem to have done several times so far this season Matt Gouldstone and Dave Jordison with the score 67-3 began rebuilding the innings, and they did so with consummate ease. They milked Alfretons bowling, turning over the strike and finding the boundary. They added 116 for the fourth wicket as both batsmen passed 50.

Alfreton needed something special to break the partnership and they found it when Gwatkin brilliantly ran out Gouldstone for 57. Gouldstone had help set a platform for Sandiacre’s big hitters and it was John Jordison who stepped up to the plate. When Dan Wheeldon had been bowled by Ben Slater for 5, Jordison joined his brother in the middle with the score 192-5 and took charge, scoring 54 of the next 75 runs. His unbeaten 54 took just 22 balls and included four fours and four sixes. It was a blistering display of clean hitting that knocked the stuffing out of an otherwise spirited Alfreton side.

Realistically Sandiacre’s 267 was likely to be beyond Alfretons reach and the question at tea would be whether Alfreton come hold on for a share of the spoils. The answer was an emphatic no.

Jake Simpson and Graham Bush have started well this year, scoring run albeit slowly. But within four Dan Wheeldon had sent both packing. Simpson edged to third slip where Goudlstone took a sharp catch, while Bush was rather more unfortunate slapping a square-cut straight to John Jordison at point.

Gwatkin and Mace had the unenviable task of keeping out Wheeldon and new ball partner Ryan McFadyean. They managed this quite well, Gwatkin in particular, whilst paying and missing on occasion he cashed in when Wheeldon staying in line, clipping several fours to leg and offering a contender for shot of the day with a drive through mid-on.

However, when Mace played his first real shot in anger, cutting away a wide long-hop from McFadyean he could find only the safe hands of John Jordison at point. It was probably the worst ball McFadyean bowled but his spell deserved a wicket and it he followed it soon after with the wicket of John Clarke, caught behind without scoring.

At 39-4 the last thing the opposition need is to see John Jordison being brought into the attack, it’s a luxury few teams can boast, and you just can’t keep him out the game at the minute. He followed his runs and catches with four wickets for just 14 runs; ending Gwatkins resistance (25 from 50), trapping Dean Whitmore in front and bowling Stuart McRobert and Daniel Robbins. His wickets sandwiched another for Wheeldon who finished with 3-27.

At 70 for 9 the writing was on the wall for Alfreton. Burton and Walden kept Sandiacre at bay for a while, holding out for 69 balls between them, but eventually Sandiacre found a way through. Chapman came into the attack and pushed a fuller delivery through Burton’s defences. Sandiacre wrapping up a 177 run victory as Alfreton were shot out for just 90.

The Second team slipped to their second defeat of the season as they were beaten by 7 wickets against their counterparts from Denby. Batting first Sandiacre were restricted to 169-8 from their 46 overs. The experience of Dougie Burgoyne was key as he took 4-37. Six of Sandiacre’s batsmen made it into double figures but none made it further than Tom Priestley’s 37. Denby rather coasted to victory losing just 3 wickets and reaching their target with 21 balls to spare. Michael Mitchell anchored the innings with an unbeaten 64.

It was a successful weekend for the Third XI as they won both games of a league double header. On Saturday they beat Stainsby Hall 2’s by 4 wickets, chasing 178 for victory. Stainsby’s innings dominated by John Wood’s 77 while Paul Standring, Ben Trembling and George Domleo picked up 2 wickets apiece. In reply Sandiacre were struggling and it was left to numbers 7 and 8, Ben Trembling and Gareth Davis put the run chase back on track. Trembling hit 36 and Davis 54 as Sandiacre won with 4 balls remaining.

On Sunday they took maximum points from their game in hand. They beat Alfreton’s thirds by 107 runs to complete a miserable weekend for Alfreton at Longmoor Lane. Sandiacre’s 238-7 was largely thanks to Chris Attwood’s 84 and Matt Shuttleworth’s stylish 91. 65 from Alfreton’s opener Adam Priestley and 28 from Phil Walters at number 5 kept Sandiacre at bay for a while, but when they were out Alfreton crumbled. There last 6 batsmen making just 2 between them. Paul Standring took 5-16 as Alfreton were all out for 131 in 41.3 overs.

The First team were also back in action on Sunday in the National 20/20. They beat Dunstall by 16 runs to set up a group final with Matlock. Having made 152-5, which included another quick-fire fifty from John Jordison (69* from 38 balls) and 32 from Ally Leek, Dunstall always struggled to keep up with the required rate. Dan Wheeldon took 4-13 from his 4 overs as Dunstall came up short.

Sandiacre Town made it four wins out of five and maintained their unbeaten start in the league with an 8 wicket win over Ilkeston.

Having won the toss Rob Attwood chose to have a bowl, with a damp pitch and rain around it seemed the sensible choice. When Dave Smit effortlessly drove Ryan McFadyean through mid-off for 4 in the third over it looked like the bowlers had a long day ahead of them on a slow and low track. McFadyean however, is having something of an Indian summer and he made the breakthrough. Smit was late on a straight one and trapped in front of middle. 23-1 soon became 24-2 as Ross Slater was bowled by Dan Wheeldon for a duck.

Ilkeston have decided to blood some youngsters this season, evident as 16 year old Daniel Shelton joined 17 year old Alex Park, with Luke Marriot also 17 due in at 6. Shelton and Park added 16 before the later was bowled for 18 by Wheeldon, driving loosely at one that nipped back to hit the top of off stump.

Ian Banks fared no better, registering Ilkestons second duck of the innings when he gently fended Andrew Marlow to gully. It was followed by Ilkestons highest partnership of the innings though as Shelton and Marriott added 44 for the fifth wicket. Marriott took a shine to Jono Clare’s off-spin, with 2 fours and a six through square leg, but was next to fall as Sandiacre brought back McFadyean. Marriott was late trying to pull a short delievery but clothed it to David Jordison at mid-on.

Andrew Marlow picked up more reward for a good spell with a second wicket, having James Brandrick caught behind. Ilkeston struggling on 90-6 as Marlow completed his 11 over spell with 2 for 22. James Lockhart kept Shelton company long enough to add 42 before he was also caught behind, Wheeldon the bowler this time as Lockhart went for 20. McFadyean then picked up the wicket of Shelton one run short of a well-deserved half century, the bowler finding his inside edge with Danny Green diving away to his left to take a good one handed catch.

At 158-8 Sandiacre fancied wrapping the innings up quickly. Grant Robertson was the third Ilkeston batsmen to fail to trouble the scorers and Rob Green was caught on the long-off boundary by Marlow off Trueman but not before Green had launched him for two big sixes to take the score to 170.

Sandiacre’s chase began slowly as John Trueman and James Chapman played the bowling of Green and Lockhart with caution. But they began to find their stride, ran some impeccably judged quick singles, much to the bowlers’ annoyance and occasionally rode their luck with shots over the top.

They took the score past one hundred before Trueman mistimed a drive to mid-on for 44. Chapman continued to score freely as Sandiacre closed in victory. With just 6 needed Qureshi, who has struggled for runs so far, attempted to launch Rob Green out the ground only to see his stumps shattered. It was disappointing for the overseas and scant reward for the bowler.

Sandiacre did eventually get past Ilkestons total with 17 overs to spare as Chapman finished 87 not out. It was perhaps an opportunity missed for Sandiacre to push for 27 points but they will be pleased with a job well done and move on to bottom side Alfreton next week.

Sandiacre Town second and third XI’s continued their good start to the season with wins over Derby Congregational’s and Breadsall seconds respectively.

Derby Cong’s find themselves at the wrong end of the table after a poor start to the campaign but they can be a dangerous opposition for the way the attacking nature of the cricket. They made early inroads too as Andrew Addy claimed the wickets of Curtley Read and Ben Ruhrmund to leave Sandiacre 20-2.

Sandiacre rebuilt with a 92 run partnership between Tom Priestley (60) and Ally Leek (47), before Ben De Vos decided to bring his off-spin into the attack. He removed both batsmen within 13 runs of each other and ran out Praveen Chandran for just 6 with Sandiacre 129-5.

This brought the skipper, Gareth Goodall and Ady Taylor to the crease and they added a 91 run partnership of their own. Goodall was the major contributor with 62 from 50 balls which included 7 fours and 3 sixes, while Taylor made 38.

De Vos completed a good spell of bowling claiming the wickets of Goodall and Kev Newbold, but not before Newbold cracked 27 from 12 balls. De Vos finishing with 4-65 as Sandiacre amassed 267-8 from their 46 overs.

The one thing you can be certain about with Derby Cong’s is that will have a go, the draw option being a last resort. However, they lost De Vos for a duck, LBW to Neil Smith and found early runs hard to come by.

Goodall then brought Anthony Taylor into the attack. The young left arm seamer has been third teams main bowling threat over the last few seasons but has found opportunities in the seconds hard to come by. He did himself no harm however, as he ran through the Derby Cong’s batting line up claiming 6-40. He took the next four wickets to fall, as Derby Cong’s slipped to 89-5 before Sandiacre found some resistance as Adam Palmer and Usman Siddiqi added 60 for the sixth wicket.

Rotating his bowlers Goodall brought back Newbold and Smith and it was Smith that struck. He bowled Siddiqi for 41 before Newbold ended Palmers dogged innings of 23 made from 51 balls. Smith claimed a third wicket when Rashid Ayaz was trapped in front first ball and it was left to Anthony Taylor to wrap up the win, clean bowling Addy and Mick Woolley. Derby Cong’s were all out for 179 from 36 overs to give Sandiacre an 88 run win, leaving them second in the table, one point behind leaders Cutthorpe.

The Third team won their fourth game on the bounce to maintain their 100% start to the season with a 6 wicket win against Breadsall.

Only 4 Breadsall batsmen made it into double figures and they were grateful to Jordan Shapland’s 28 batting at number 8 to get them past 100. The wickets were shared around between openers Paul Standring (2-16) and James Dean (3-28) and first change bowlers Jake Trembling (2-24) and Paul White (2-34) as Breadsall were all out for 119.

In reply Matt Shuttleworth made 36 and Neil MacNamee dealt only in boundaries for his 24. Sandiacre reaching their target in just 23-1 overs to pick up another 22 points. The win leaves them in second place, 24 points behind Langley Mill but with a game in hand.
