STCC 1st XI - Jackson cup winners!
The first bit of silverware was up for grabs on Friday night as Spondon took on a Brave Sandiacre XI at A&B. Spondon were almost at full strength with a Wurzle Gummage look-alike in for Paul Cook. Sandiacre drafted in fielding specialist Danny Green and Jackson Cup specialist Michael Hart and his Open Championship trousers, which are yet to taste defeat in 7 previous Jackson Cup matches, yielding one winners trophy.

Spondon won the toss and elected to bat, that went down like a fart in a spacesuit with the Sandiacre players as they now had to bravely go and field in the tropical heat. The sweltering heat proved too much for Sheldon’s fair complection, he was unable to take the field until the 8th over. Norman Akhtar and Ian Parkin opened the bowling as Spondon made slow but steady progress. With the low and slow track compensating for a vast, rapid outfield it was difficult to gauge what a good score would be.

Chances came and went, which is inevitable in this format of the game, as Spondon searched for runs. Trumo carried one over the boundary gifting Colin Ingram 6 runs instead of sending him on his way. Parko also had Ben Ashdown caught off his own bowling but a Ben Ruhrmund (no ball) was given.
Parkin made amends with the very next ball as he bowled Ben Ashdown who was backing away looking to give himself room. That brought Daz Yeomans to the crease. He decided that the best form of attack was defence as he blocked his way to 18. Mike Hart dropped him at deep midwicket in the only aerial shot he played but unlike his skipper, the Jackson Cup stalwart was able to save 6 runs keeping them to just a couple.

Three times winner, Phil Attwood, was most impressed with Town Drunk though as he watched from the sidelines, especially as he achieved a life long dream of having to pay to watch him play cricket, although a few balls later Town Drunnk did manage to somehow tread on his own hand as he fielded one in the deep.
Norman Akhtar was as tight as ever.
A flurry of quick wickets saw the game turn in Sandiacres favour. Colin Ingram was out for 41, bowled attempting to sweep Trumo. Gary Balance was run out and Daz Yeomans followed soon after. Dave Hartley clipped a leg stump half volley to Trumo as the ball continued to follow him around as if he were Grant Attwood and the ball was Nick Briars circa 1995.
Some lusty blows (easy Michael, it means the ball got hit a long way) from young Joe Kellogg enabled Spondon to set a respectable total of 132, despite his brothers best attempts to scupper that as he blocked out the final over of the innings from Norman Ahktar.
After the interval, which was spent arguing Ifti’s daft notion that Sandiacre only needed 6 an over to secure victory, eventually convincing him that would leave Sandiacres chase 13 runs short of their victory target, Sandiacre started their reply. Captain Combover and Minty Birch strode confidently out to the middle and started to chip away at Spondons total. Then disaster struck as the batteries on Trumos mobility scooter ran low and he was run out attempting a second. This brought Davo and his flashing blade to the crease and his partnership with Minty Birch all but took the game away from Spondon, well it did take the game away from Spondon.
Minty was eventually out for 73 after amassing numerous hits that were bigger than any the Beatles had. Davo finished unbeaten on 25 as Norman Akhtar hit the winning runs. Sandiacre winning by 7 wickets with an over to spare.
Davo saw them home
Minty Birch was in fine form

After a closing speech that resembled Town Drunk after a few beers (no one could understand a word), the celebrations began and continued long into the night until the time came for Town Drunk to put his Open Championship trousers back in the drawer until next years competition when he will attempt to equal Phil Attwood and win a third Jaackson Cup.
